Learning English isn’t difficult. Unfortunately, many students and even teachers complicate learning English by breaking it down into its different parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

All too often too much time is spent on reading and writing. Much less time is dedicated to speaking and listening. This is where we have all been going wrong.

To learn a language efficiently and effectively, we must focus most of our efforts on listening comprehension. When you listen in English you learn all of English!

Listening teaches:

• vocabulary – Listening to English teaches you words and phrases without you having to translate them back to Spanish! Listening to English is the fastest way to learn to THINK in English.
• grammar – Listening to English teaches you the grammar rules without having to study them individually. You’ll be able to answer the question “Why?” with “Porque así se dice.”
• writing – If you can speak, you can write. To make sure you will be able to write in English you must also read so that you can learn how to spell in English. English isn’t pronounced like it is written. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to your English success that you listen while you read. You can do this with audio books or subtitles. Don’t read without listening. This creates false pronunciations in your head which will make understanding spoken English more difficult.
• speaking – If you can comprehend it, you can reproduce it with practice. Spoken English is quite difficult to reproduce from written English. It’s much easier and way more effective to copy native English speakers speech. There are rises, falls, stress, linking, reduction, and a whole lot of other terms to learn in order to be able to speak English. But you don’t have to actually study all that pronunciation stuff!! Just listen to native English speakers to learn it naturally!

I hope I’ve got you convinced that you should spend the majority of your study time listening to English in order to learn English efficiently and effectively! Spending too much time on the other areas like writing, grammar, and vocabulary can actually hinder your English learning progress!

But you can’t just start listening to any and all English and expect to learn! Nope, there’s a method to follow! I call it the 4-step SELVA method! And you’ll need to use it every time you study English!

The 4-Step SELVA inglés Method…

…to learn English efficiently and effectively by listening to and watching video.

1) Watch and read along with the subtitles once. Look up words that get your attention. Jot them down with their context in your New Things English Journal. Don’t try to understand every word. Just try to follow along. Read over your notes after the video ends.

2) Watch and read along with the subtitles once more. This time don’t stop the video to look up anything. Just watch it and relax.

3) Watch the video one last time without reading the subtitles or your notes! You’ll be amazed at how much you understand!

4) Write down a few (no more than five) new things you learned in your New Things English Journal.

For the BEST results and fastest learning, watch one show until you complete all of its episodes. When I learned Spanish I watched every single Bob Esponja episode I could before I moved on to my next show, La Que Se Avecina. Then I watch every episode of La Que Se Avecina. After that I could really understand the Spanish folks!

So many students ask me, “Where do I start learning English?”

My answer is you should begin learning English with preschool cartoons! Once you understand English for preschoolers, move up to a show for older children. After that, watch something for teenagers. Then finally, you’ll be ready for shows for adults. And eventually you’ll be able to watch and understand the fast-talking reporters on the news!

Start with something easy to understand and that you enjoy!

Aprender inglés no es difícil. Desafortunadamente, muchos estudiantes e incluso profesores complican el aprendizaje del inglés al separarlo en sus diferentes partes: escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir.

Con demasiada frecuencia se utiliza mucho tiempo en leer y escribir y menos tiempo es dedicado a hablar y escuchar. Aquí es donde todos nos hemos equivocado.

Escuchar enseña:

• Vocabulario – ¡Escuchar inglés te enseña palabras y frases sin tener que traducirlas al español! Escuchando inglés es la manera más rápida de aprender a PENSAR en inglés.
• Gramática – Escuchar inglés te enseña reglas de gramática sin tener que estudiarlas individualmente. Tú podrás responder la pregunta “¿Por qué?” con “Porque así dice”.
• Escribir – Si tú puedes hablar, tú puedes escribir. Para asegurar que podrás escribir en inglés también debes de leer, de esa manera puedes aprender cómo deletrear en inglés. El inglés no se pronuncia como se escribe. Por lo tanto, es absolutamente esencial para tu éxito con el inglés que escuches mientras lees. Tú puedes hacer esto con libros de audio o subtítulos. No leas sin escuchar. Esto crea falsas pronunciaciones en tu cabeza que hace que sea más difícil el entendimiento del inglés hablado.
• Hablar – Si tú puedes comprenderlo, tú puedes reproducirlo con práctica. El inglés hablado es bastante difícil de reproducir a través del inglés escrito. Es más fácil y más efectivo copiar lo que dicen los hablantes de inglés nativos. Hay altos, bajos, presión, vinculación, reducción, y un montón de otros términos por aprender y ser capaz de hablar inglés. ¡Pero, en realidad, no tienes que estudiar todo eso! ¡Sólo escucha a hablantes de inglés nativos para aprenderlo naturalmente!

¡Espero tenerte convencido de que la manera que deberías pasar la mayoría del tiempo de tu estudio es escuchando inglés para aprenderlo eficiente y efectivamente! Pasando demasiado tiempo en las otras áreas como escribir, gramática y vocabulario puede, incluso, obstaculizar tu proceso de aprendizaje.

El Método de 4 Pasos SELVA inglés:

… para aprender inglés eficiente y efectivamente al escucharlo y mirar videos.

1) Míralo leyendo subtítulos. Ve las palabras que atrapen tu atención. Apúntalas con su contexto en tu Diario de Cosas Nuevas de Inglés. No trates de entender cada palabra. Sólo trata de seguir. Lee tus notas después de que el video termine.

2) Mira y en conjunto lee los subtítulos una vez más. Esta vez no detengas el video para ver algo. Sólo míralo y relájate.

3) ¡Mira el video una última vez sin ver los subtítulos o tus notas! Estarás sorprendido de cuanto entiendes.

4) Escribe algunas pocas (no más de 5) nuevas cosas que aprendiste en tu Diario de Nuevas Cosas de Inglés.

Para obtener los mejores resultados y el más rápido aprendizaje mira una serie hasta que completes todos sus episodios. Cuando aprendí español yo miré cada uno de los capítulos de Bob Esponja que pude antes de seguir con una nueva serie: La Que Se Avecina. Entonces, miré cada episodio de La Que Se Avecina y ¡después de eso pude realmente entender el español, amigos!

Muchos estudiantes me preguntan, “¿Dónde empiezo a aprender inglés?”

Mi respuesta es ¡Deberías empezar aprendiendo inglés con caricaturas para preescolares! Una vez que entiendes inglés para preescolares, sigue con una serie para niños más grandes. Después de eso, mira algo para adolescentes. Finalmente, estarás listo para series para adultos. ¡Y eventualmente podrás mirar y entender los reporteros que hablan muy rápido en las noticias!
