El Tercer Condicional – El Pasado Irreal

Se usa el tercer condicional para hablar de situaciones irreales o imposibles en el pasado.

  • If I had studied, I would have passed the test.
    • Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera/habría aprobado el examen.
    • La Verdad: NO estudié y NO aprobé el examen.
  • If I had not studied in Xalapa, I would not have met my first husband.
    • Si no hubiera estudiado en Xalapa, no hubiera/habría conocido a mi primer esposo.
    • La Verdad: ESTUDIÉ en Xalapa y CONOCÍ a mi primer esposo.

Los Condicionales están compuestos de dos partes: Una Condición y Un Resultado

La Condición, + El Resultado

  • If I had studied, I would have passed the test.
    • Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera/habría aprobado el examen.

También se puede poner primero el resultado. Si se pone primero el resultado la oración ya no lleva coma.

El Resultado + La Condición

  • I would have passed the test if I had studied.
    • Hubiera/habría aprobado el examen si hubiera estudiado.

La Gramática del Tercer Condicional

If + pasado perfecto, would have + participio pasado.

  • If I had studied, I would have passed the test.
    • Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera/habría aprobado el examen.

Las Contracciones del Tercer Condicional

OJO: La contracción de los dos WOULD y HAD es ‘d.

  • she had = she’d
  • she would = she’d
  • If + pasado perfecto, would have + participio pasado.
  • If she’d studied, she’d have passed the test.
  • Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera aprobado el examen.

Se puede hacer contracciones de tres palabras y es una forma común de hablar en el tercer condicional.

  • she would have = she’d’ve
  • If + pasado perfecto, would have + participio pasado.
  • If she’d studied, she’d’ve passed the test.
  • Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera aprobado el examen.

Si el tercer condicional lleva negación, se forma la contracción con el verbola palabra justo enfrente de “not”.

  • If + pasado perfecto, would have + participio pasado.
  • If I hadn’t studied, I wouldn’t have passed the test. (Si no hubiera estudiado, no hubiera aprobado el examen.)

Would/Might/Could

Se pueden usar los verbos modales Might y Could en vez de Would en el tercer condicional.

  • If I had studied, I would have passed the test. (Si hubiera estudiado, hubiera aprobado el examen.)
  • If I had studied, I might have passed the test. (Si hubiera estudiado, puede que hubiera aprobado el examen.)
  • If I had studied, I could have passed the test. (Si hubiera estudiado, podría haber aprobado el examen.)

Preguntas en el Tercer Condicional

  • Could you have passed the test if you had studied? (¿Podrías haber aprobado el examen si hubieras estudiado?)
  •  If she had worn her glasses, would she have wrecked the car? (¿Hubiera chocado el coche si hubiera llevado usado sus lentes?)

Inventa una oración del tercer condicional con el contexto dado.

  • He got sick. Ejemplo: He wouldn’t have gotten sick if he had worn his coat.
  • She missed the bus.
  • They didn’t announce their engagement.

Pues, estudié español 3 años en la universidad y después de viví en Mexico unos 8 meses. Fue durante mis estudios en Mexico que por fin empecé a entender y poder responder en español. La razón no es porque viví en Mexico, sino que SOLAMENTE escuché español.
